Aphasia Partnership Training (APT)

A programme of work to co-design and evaluate the effectiveness of training a person with aphasia and their communication partner to communicate better together.

Aphasia affects the whole family, not just the person with aphasia. Communication partner training (CPT) is a type of therapy for people with aphasia and their families. CPT may help people with aphasia and their family to have good conversations again, but at the moment, CPT is not routinely offered by speech and language therapists in the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom.

Our aim is to develop a new communication partner training programme called APT and manual for NHS delivery to people with aphasia and their communication partners living in the community, evaluate APT and its value for money.
